Bringing Luck Into Your Life – Life Stories 207
We’re diving into the concept of luck—what it means, how some people seem to have it in abundance, and how we can bring more of it into our lives. But before we get into that, let’s take a moment to focus. Right now, the only thing that matters is this moment. Let go of everything you have to do later and any goals you missed yesterday. As you breathe in and out, imagine an ocean of calm washing over you. Let it flow through every part of your body with each breath.
Now, about luck—some people seem to have it in their favor, don’t they? And it can be easy to feel a little envious of them. We have control over how hard we work, but we don’t have control over the things we’re born with, like genetics, connections, or IQ, which can influence what we’re capable of. Is it fair that nepotism, natural talents, or appearances play such a big role? Of course not. But instead of fighting against what others have, we need to focus on what we can control—our own path forward.
Luck can run out, but the skills and qualities you develop last a lifetime. They’re what push people to the next level. Some people, no matter how much they seem to have been handed, still crash and burn because they didn’t learn the right lessons from their good fortune. And if they can figure out how to use their luck before it runs dry, so can you—even if you don’t think you’re lucky.
First, we need to change how we think about luck. People often see it as success or fortune brought by chance, not by effort. It can seem like luck gravitates to only a select few. But the truth is, we all get chances—some small, some life-changing. The key is recognizing them when they come. Some people miss the smaller opportunities or are too scared to take the bigger ones. But those chances? They’re your luck knocking.
Many people don’t take these opportunities because they’re waiting for the “perfect” one. But perfect rarely shows up, and those who wait for it might find themselves waiting forever. The truth is, we all have luck in different forms, but action matters far more than chance. Luck isn’t just about something that happened yesterday, last week, or even last year. It’s the cumulative result of consistent effort over time—effort that will benefit not just you, but possibly even future generations.
Thomas Jefferson once said, “I’m a great believer in luck, and I find the harder I work, the more of it I have.” Instead of focusing on how others seem to get all the breaks, look at how they approach the world. People who seem “lucky” often have a different mindset. Bad luck? That’s inevitable; everyone faces it. But constantly blaming luck or circumstances is a way of burying yourself in excuses, which only prevents you from achieving what you want.
On the other hand, good luck is something you can create through hard work, optimism, and bravery. At some point, when opportunity comes knocking, you’ve got to trust yourself enough to take it. As Martin Seligman, the founder of positive psychology, said, “Optimists endure the same storms in life as pessimists, but they weather them better and emerge from them stronger.” That’s what we want from optimism—not blind faith, but the ability to come out of life’s challenges in a better place than when you started.
Building luck takes time, but the payoff is huge. It’s about learning to trust yourself and your instincts. Sure, you can analyze everything, research every option, and weigh every decision. But to really get luck on your side, you have to listen to your gut. Studies show that overanalyzing big decisions can actually lower your chances of picking up on subtle patterns that your conscious mind misses. Trusting your gut doesn’t mean abandoning logic—it means recognizing that your subconscious is processing countless factors in the background, even when you don’t realize it. The more you trust that inner voice, the stronger it becomes.
Finally, if you want luck on your side, surround yourself with people who seem to attract it. We’ve talked before about how the people you spend time with influence your life, and it’s true—you are the sum of the five people you hang out with the most. Luck is contagious. Spend time with optimistic, successful, and driven people, and their energy will rub off on you. They’ll help you see opportunities when they arise, encourage you to take bold action when you doubt yourself, and support you when setbacks inevitably happen.
Luck is already on your side. All you need to do is align your mindset and take action. Let’s go.
