Everyone Can Be Great – Life Stories 263
You know, greatness isn’t reserved for those whose names are in lights or whose faces appear on screens. In fact, the greatest people in this world are often the ones we never hear about. Their stories aren’t told in bestselling books or made into Netflix documentaries. We won’t find them on Forbes magazine covers or at award shows. Sometimes, we hear about them through stories from friends or family, and we’re left saying, “They should write a book about their life.” But why is it that we often associate greatness with fame? Why do we measure it based on recognition rather than on skill, perseverance, and character?
Those who become famous are often the lucky ones. There are countless people who have changed the world in profound ways, yet remain completely unknown. Fame, after all, is part luck, part pursuit. You can become famous through talent, but even then, it’s a game of chance—you need to be in the right place at the right time, meet the right people, and sometimes get caught up in the right scandal. But here’s the truth: not everyone can be famous, but everyone can be great.
As Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. so wisely said, “Everyone can be great, because greatness is determined by service.” It’s about what we give to others and how we use our time and talents to positively impact the world around us. Greatness isn’t measured by how many people know your name or how much money you’ve made. It’s measured by the dedication you bring to perfecting your craft, by the effort you put into bettering yourself and helping others.
When you pour your energy into something meaningful, when you show up for your community and make someone’s day a little brighter, you’re already great. You see, greatness isn’t about being “better” than others. It’s about being the best version of yourself, day after day, consistently working toward your goals. The people who truly inspire us aren’t the ones with the flashiest cars or the biggest houses. What truly moves people is ambition and work ethic—and those things are available to everyone, no matter their circumstances.
In a survey asking people to define greatness, not one person mentioned fame, wealth, or status. Instead, people described greatness as something we can all achieve. It’s not a privilege reserved for a few—it’s within everyone’s reach. They defined greatness as having more faith in yourself than the average person does. Greatness means being the one who doesn’t give up, who works a little harder, who pushes a little further. It’s about resilience and tenacity.
One of the most successful athletes, Ultraman champion Rich Roll, said that greatness is about being the best version of yourself. It’s about finding the things that ignite a spark within you and relentlessly pursuing them. For some, greatness is simply about being happy—finding joy in the little things, staying physically and mentally healthy, and learning what makes you tick.
So, what is your definition of greatness? For many of us, the first thing that comes to mind is celebrity status, but when we dig deeper, we realize that’s not what we truly value. Do you want to make people’s lives better? Do you want to inspire joy, encourage others, or create something that has a lasting impact? Whether it’s through adventure, creating beautiful moments with loved ones, or unapologetically staying in on a Friday night to recharge, greatness comes in many forms.
In a world obsessed with social media, we often get caught up in the idea that if something isn’t posted online, it didn’t happen. But ask yourself this: if no one ever hears about the amazing things you’re doing, are they still amazing? Of course, they are. You don’t need validation from likes or comments to prove that your work matters. The truth is, the people around you notice, even if you don’t always realize it.
Remember, when you strive to be great, you elevate the people around you as well. Greatness isn’t a solitary pursuit—it raises the bar for everyone. When you push yourself, you push the world forward. And the best part? Everyone can be great.
