Fear is a natural part of life—it’s your brain’s way of trying to protect you. But more often than not, it becomes a gatekeeper, locking you away from the experiences, growth, and achievements waiting on the other side. The truth is, courage isn’t the absence of fear; it’s taking action in spite of it.

Be Afraid and Do It Anyway – Life Stories 156
Hey there, great to have you back with us today. Instead of just sitting back and letting our thoughts fly by, we’re going to catch them, name them, and categorize them.
As thoughts jump into your mind, observe them like you would a painting. What’s the core feeling behind that thought? Is it nervousness about an upcoming interview? Worry about finances? Heartbreak over a lost relationship? Now, let’s shift those labels. Instead of nervous, try calling it excitement—this interview could bring new opportunities. Instead of worried, how about curious—can you stretch your resources and make it work? Instead of heartbroken, try at peace—this is a chance to pivot and start anew.
Changing the name of your thoughts won’t make the situation disappear, but how you understand something affects how your brain responds to it. Fear is one of those emotions that can fester, especially when left unchecked. Often, our fear creates unrealistic scenarios that never actually come true. Fear is a powerful feeling, but more often than not, it doesn’t match the actual situation. There’s no difference in how your brain reacts to a real threat like danger and something like a public-speaking engagement, which, let’s face it, isn’t life-threatening.
Fear Isn’t the Enemy, Inaction Is
Here’s something to think about: two of the biggest fears people have are death and public speaking. Crazy, right? But your brain can’t differentiate between a life-threatening scenario and something like the fear of failure or judgment. The fear feels the same. The problem is, when you let that fear take control, you give it power. You start backing down, avoiding risks, and as a result, your fear bubble keeps getting bigger.
But remember this: the fears we don’t face become our limits. If you keep giving in to fear, you’re letting it build walls around your potential. Your amygdala—the part of your brain that triggers fear—needs to be retrained. It’s up to you to tell your brain which fears are worth responding to and which ones aren’t. Otherwise, fear will dictate your actions and rob you of opportunities.
Reframe Your Thoughts
Instead of calling everything “fear,” start naming it for what it really is. “I don’t want to go to the gym because I’m scared people will judge me.” No, that’s not really fear—it’s insecurity. Or, “I’m scared to ask my boss for a raise because I might get fired.” That’s self-doubt, not fear. When you break it down, most fears are either tied to insecurities or fear of the unknown. And isn’t that a relief? Reducing all those overwhelming emotions to just two categories makes them feel more manageable.
We worry that we’re not good enough, that people will judge us, that we’ll fail or lose control. But these thoughts are just that—thoughts. They’re not real unless you make them real by letting them control you.
Fear Isn’t Permanent
Fear stops you from taking action, but remember this: every time you face fear, you weaken its grip on you. Either you’ll fail and learn from it, or you’ll succeed and surprise yourself. But you won’t know unless you take that first step. Running from fear only keeps it alive. Facing it head-on is the only way to grow, learn, and realize that most of your fears weren’t real threats to begin with.
Your brain is just trying to protect you. But here’s the truth: you don’t need protecting from everything. Some things you need to face, learn from, and move on. Don’t let your fears build walls around your potential. Be afraid, but do it anyway.
