Through Hell and Beyond – Keep Moving – Life Stories 233
We need to face something darker: hell. Not the mythical underworld from ancient lore—but the personal hells we all go through. You might have experienced this. The heartbreak that rips through your chest like fire, or the loss that leaves an empty space nothing seems to fill. Maybe it’s guilt, shame, failure, or that creeping sense of low self-worth. It’s like being trapped in a mental storm that never clears, isn’t it?
Hell, for many, isn’t a fiery pit or a far-off land. It’s a moment in the mind. A state that consumes every inch of your energy, every corner of your thoughts, until you can’t even find yourself anymore. It’s relentless, suffocating, and blurs the lines between day and night, hope and despair. But here’s the thing—if hell is a state of mind, it means it has a beginning… and an end.
You can get out. But here’s the harsh truth: some people get stuck. They linger in their mental hells far longer than they should, far longer than they can endure.
Wherever you are right now, if you’re feeling like you’re trapped in a situation that’s devouring every ounce of your energy, know that you are not crazy. Hell is real, and sometimes it’s not a place beneath the Earth but something brewing inside your own brain. You might not realize it, but your mind is fighting a battle against invisible chains, and those chains are forged by trauma, stress, and emotional pain.
When you’re going through the worst of it, your brain isn’t functioning the way it should. You’re being flooded with stress hormones like cortisol and norepinephrine, and it’s wreaking havoc on key areas of your brain. The amygdala, responsible for your fight-or-flight response, the hippocampus, which handles learning and memory, and the prefrontal cortex, which deals with decision-making and emotional regulation—all of these are getting pounded by stress. Over time, this changes the very structure of your brain. Veterans with PTSD have a hippocampus 6% smaller than average. It’s a physical alteration that proves what we’ve long suspected—trauma leaves scars on the brain.
And no, you don’t have to go through war to experience PTSD. Trauma comes in many forms. It could be a series of small but devastating events, a toxic relationship, a job that crushes your spirit, or losing something or someone you love. Your brain can stay stuck in survival mode even long after the actual danger has passed. So how do we escape?
First, understand that blame and shame are two of the most powerful forces keeping you locked in that mental prison. Research professor Brené Brown makes a clear distinction between guilt and shame: guilt is about your behavior (“I did something bad”), but shame is about your identity (“I am bad”). And when we get stuck in shame, we convince ourselves we deserve to be in hell. We become our own worst enemies.
Here’s the kicker: you are not a mistake. You might’ve made mistakes, but that doesn’t mean you’re destined to burn in the flames of self-loathing forever. Whatever you’ve lost—whether it’s a job, a loved one, your health, or even your sense of self—you need to realize it’s possible to come out on the other side.
Let go of the blame. Let go of the shame. Take responsibility for your future, not for the things that have dragged you down. You can’t control what’s already happened, but you can control what happens next.
You have to keep moving. If you’re going through hell right now, don’t stop. Keep moving. Don’t camp out in that dark place. One step at a time. One day at a time. Even if it’s just one tiny shift in your thinking each day. Less blame. More courage.
We’re here to remind you that whatever storm you’re going through, you aren’t meant to stay there. You are meant to pass through it, to come out on the other side, stronger and wiser.
Keep going. One step forward, even when it feels impossible. And until you reach the other side, never forget—you are not alone in this fight.
