When Confusion Becomes a Catalyst
We’re glad you’re here, showing up day after day to prioritize your growth and self-discovery. It’s not always easy to follow through on commitments to yourself, especially when life gets chaotic. Days blend into weeks, then months, and suddenly, another year has gone by. But for these 10 minutes, we’re hitting pause—this is your time, your opportunity to reflect and dig deeper into the things that help you lead a happier, more fulfilling life.
Why Confusion Makes Us Uncomfortable
Today’s topic is all about a feeling most of us try to avoid: confusion. It’s uncomfortable, isn’t it? It stirs up frustration, insecurity, and even shame. Many people have been harshly criticized for not understanding things early in life, creating a lasting fear of confusion that follows them well into adulthood. When we encounter confusion, it’s as if a survival instinct kicks in, urging us to escape.
But what if confusion isn’t a signal to run, but an invitation to explore?
Confusion, when you strip it down, is simply the mind’s way of saying, “There’s more here to learn.” It’s part of a group of emotions called epistemic emotions, which are crucial for learning and growth. Think of it as a mental alarm bell, nudging you to dig deeper, expand your understanding, and move beyond the surface.
Rethinking the Role of Confusion
In his book Think Again: The Power of Knowing What You Don’t Know, Adam Grant puts it beautifully: “I need time with my confusion.” Instead of something to avoid, confusion can be seen as a signpost pointing to an opportunity for new insights. It’s telling you that you’re about to enter new mental territory, and that’s not something to shy away from.
Yet, so many of us instinctively push confusion aside, preferring to retreat into what’s familiar and comfortable. After all, comfort is one of the most intoxicating “drugs” of modern life. Our ancestors fought for thousands of years just to survive, and it’s only in relatively recent history that many of us have been able to prioritize comfort and stability. It’s no wonder we cling to the known so fiercely.
But here’s the thing—comfort can be a trap. If you always retreat to the familiar, you’re sealing off the parts of yourself that are capable of growth. Leaning into confusion, allowing yourself to sit in that uncomfortable state, is where real transformation begins.
From Discomfort to Curiosity
How do you transform confusion from an uncomfortable feeling into a tool for self-discovery?
Start by leaning into your curiosity. When confusion arises, ask yourself:
- What is it exactly that I don’t understand?
- What’s making this situation unclear?
- What’s triggering my curiosity?
This exploration doesn’t have to be exhaustive. Even just sitting with the question, allowing yourself to be in a state of “not knowing,” can open doors. Your curiosity can act as a bridge, moving you from confusion to clarity, one small step at a time.
Confusion as a Signal for Growth
Think of confusion as the mind’s invitation to pause and pay closer attention. It’s not a barrier; it’s a pathway. When you allow yourself to stay in that state, resisting the urge to retreat, you’re essentially training your brain to become more resilient, adaptable, and—yes—curious.
The next time you feel confused, instead of dismissing it, try to view it as a cue to pause and engage. Sit with it. Ask yourself what it’s trying to tell you. What if confusion isn’t just a state to be resolved, but a place to be explored? What if, instead of pushing through, you spent a little more time unraveling the knot, allowing the threads to separate and reveal new insights?
A Small Exercise for Today
For today’s reflection, we want you to think back to a recent time when you felt confused or overwhelmed by something you didn’t understand. It might have been a concept, a conversation, or even a relationship dynamic. Write down that experience. Ask yourself: What was it about the situation that felt confusing? Then, jot down a few things you wish you understood better. Is there someone you could talk to? A book you could read? Or perhaps it’s just a matter of spending more time with the question.
Sometimes the best way to resolve confusion isn’t to rush to an answer, but to linger in the question. Because the questions you ask today shape the answers you’ll discover tomorrow.
We hope today’s session has helped you reframe confusion as a valuable tool rather than a frustrating obstacle. Remember, it’s not a sign of weakness or failure—it’s a sign that you’re on the edge of something new. Embrace it, explore it, and see where it leads.
We look forward to seeing you back here tomorrow. Until then, stay curious.
